Triad project manages pioneering in-cell technology to UK prisons
The body responsible for UK prisons is implementing a £52m In-Cell Technology Programme. The aim is to empower prisoners while reducing time staff have to spend on everyday tasks. This will be achieved by furnishing prisoners for the first time with their own laptop computers for them to access a range of services, including meal selection, organising family visits, arranging activities and basic shopping. There are also communal kiosks on landings for some of these tasks.
About the client
HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ). It’s responsible for all prisons and other correctional services within the UK.
The challenge
The original pilot was conducted at two prisons, Wayland and Berwyn. Responsible for the programme’s project management, our task was to oversee the migration of Wayland and Berwyn to new systems, whilst managing the installation of technology and hardware to 13 new sites, including women’s prisons and young offender institutions.
The project has high ambitions, from saving time and money for staff through to improving lives and conditions for prisoners, thereby helping to make prisons safer and more stable, and ultimately reducing reoffending. With so much at stake, it’s being carefully monitored at the highest levels.
